Today marks the 75th anniversary of Action Comics #1, which featured Superman making his first appearance in a 13-page story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
This was pretty much the birth of the superhero genre – and the comic industry in general – an event which has (clearly) had such an incredible impact every single one of us.
And in case you’re curious about the date on the cover, that was actually the date where sellers were advised to remove any unsold copies from the newsstands (quite a common practice back in those days).
So whether you like Supes or not, today is still a pretty damn significant date in the history of comicbooks!
Also, in a related note, the Mayor of Cleveland has declared today to be ‘Superman Day’, in honor of the anniversary.
To commemorate, a Superman flag will be raised on the steps of City Hall, the lights at the City Hall and Terminal Tower will be changed to red, blue and yellow, and the Superman Exhibit at the airport will be stocking cupcakes and exclusive travel cards.
Superman was created in Cleveland by Siegal and Shuster during the great depression.
Pretty cool, I say.
