Sup fools! (In Mr. T voice)
Ever get to that time in the week when you hafta write up your regular column for a “popular” online community aimed at comic fans only to realise you have bugger all to talk about?
That just me?, baws!
I’ll admit I’ve been pretty sidetracked this week, my online activity has been at a minimum due to health issues relating to my hands not entirely working properly at the moment and typing has been pretty uncomfortable (can’t be fucked going into details regarding my as yet unknown condition but I’m due in hospital in about two weeks so here’s hoping they fix it this time) so my kindle and netflix have become my best pals.
As a result of not working and relying on sick pay from the Government (which is pretty pitiful by the way) I haven’t been able to afford many comics this past month or so. The only things I’ve kept in my pull box are Deadpool and Hawkeye and the rest I’ve been acquiring via donning a hat with a skull and crossbones and pillaging the seven seas *nudge nudge* if you get my drift.
Now first off I’d like to point out that anything I download I usually buy (unless it’s shit) in TPB as soon as I can afford it but untill then I look at it as a “try before you buy” or “lending” type deal. I get to read a ton of comics I would have otherwise not picked up or missed when they first came out and I make a point of going out and spending my money on the collected editions as soon as they become available to me.
This then got me thinking about how I download way less shows/movies since subscribing to Netflix and since subscribing to Spotify premium I haven’t downloaded a single song……so why hasn’t anyone come up with a paid for digital library of books and comics you can download and discard at will?
I’m Pretty sure Amazon have a “lending library” for Prime users but Imagine a version of Spotify for books and comics with literally millions of titles you can read at any time you want? Personally I would love such a service to exist then writers etc wouldn’t hafta wait for their royalty cheques coming through from trade purchases and I wouldn’t hafta go through the hassle of acquiring via “other” means.
So what’s your take on it all? do you download? Are you gonna get on your moral high horse? Would you subscribe to an online library of comics you could read at will?
Comments in the usual place and I’ll see y’all next week.

(Disclaimer)
I really don’t condone ripping off writers and artists and I genuinely do buy 90% of the comics I download as soon as I can afford them. Untill My hands got jacked up I was spending between £30 and £40 a week in forbidden planet buying my comics because I genuinely love comicbooks and enjoy having physical copies I can display on my shelves and pick up any time.
My Kindle is awesome for traveling with and taking hundreds of books with you at once. Please DO buy your comics when/if you can and support the writers and artists for all the hard work they put in to the books you love.
