Afternoon guys and girls,
I hope you all enjoyed con weekend in Glasgow. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it due to other commitments but I’ve been hearing good things coming out of it. Based on the previous cons I’ve been to, one of the things I like most is the sense of community generated by being surrounded by hundreds if not thousands of people sharing your interests and passions. The atmosphere at the best cons can be electric and really does make the experience all the better for it.
Now that being said, if we are a community then do you think we have a responsibility or duty to help one another? Part of the reason we started this page was to create a forum to get together and discuss shared interests, news and general information about the scene.
In doing so I’ve become more aware of comic book themed charitable organisations.
For instance, DC have launched ‘We Can be Heroes“ which supports ‘Save the Children’, ‘IRC’ and ‘Mercy Corps’. Unfortunately I think you need to be inside the US to donate (you certainly do to buy their merch) but still, a damn good idea.
There’s also the ‘Hero Initiative‘ which in it’s own words:
“…came up with the idea to create a financial safety net for comic creators, much in the same fashion that exists in almost any other trade from plumbing to pottery. By March of 2001, the federal government approved The Hero Initiative as a publicly supported not-for-profit corporation under section 501 (c) (3).#
Since its inception, The Hero Initiative (Formerly known as A.C.T.O.R., A Commitment To Our Roots) has had the good fortune to grant over $500,000 to over 50 comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today.”
What do you guys think of organisations like these, have you ever donated and can you think of any others you’d like name checked?
