Another week, another deluge of titles hitting the shelves of your local comic shop.  And while I’m sure you all have your favourites, your on-going purchases, sometimes a title will leap out and grab your attention based solely on its cover.  And that’s what this column is all about.  Judging the books, not on the content within, but solely on the cover art.

Simple, right?

So before we get to the best of the best, let’s get this show on the road with some of this week’s honourable mentions…

Batman #23 (DC Comics)

Say what you like about Snyder and Capullo’s ‘Zero Year’, there’s no denying the potential for great covers that this arc/event/whatever provides. And something about this cover just got my geek senses tingling, with the beautifully straightforward image of Bruce pulling on the trademark gauntlet (presumably for the first time). Cracking stuff.

Now, this one needs no real explanation. It’s Alex Ross. It’s a cover. It’s going to be in my ‘Cover of the Week’ column. Get used to it, kids. Also worth noting it’s the second part of the series’ diptych cover, and combines to make a ridiculously awesome image. The comic itself ain’t bad either.

It’s always nice to have a bit of humour in a cover, and to be honest, there isn’t a title that does that better than ol’ Deadpool.  A follow-up to last week’s 70’s issue, there’s just something delightfully absurd about the cover blurb that sums up everything you need to know about this title.  And all humour aside, the shadowy renderings of ‘Pool, Iron Fist and Luke Cage are pretty damn tasty.

Which leads us to…

Cover of the Week

I know, I know… least surprising outcome ever, right?  Well, bite me.  Even objectively speaking, Adam Kubert’s stunning representation of the Mad Titan most definitely earns this slot.  The colouring, the shadows and the utterly terrifying snarl on the face of Thanos all combine to make this a pretty damn easy choice for my ‘Cover of the Week’.

And that’s all, folks.  Feel free to agree, disagree or suggest covers of your own.  And I’ll see you kids next week for another round of comic book eye candy.
