There were all kinds of great comics on sale this past Wednesday, with some tremendous stories being told.  But that’s something I’ll cover a little later on today, because now, we’re talking about style.  About jaw-dropping covers that make you want to pick up a comic despite not knowing a damn thing about its contents.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty.

And as usual, before we get to the best of the best, let’s take a moment to appreciate some of this week’s honourable mentions…

Batman & Nightwing (DC Comics)

Patrick Gleason is rapidly climbing up my “top artist” rankings by virtue of his detailed and bold (yet not overly cartoony) work.  This entire issue is a testament to his visual storytelling abilities, and the cover provides such an interesting hook that it immediately makes you want to know more about the story being told.  Seeing Batman and Nightwing grappling in the dust with the Heretic as Damian looks on is a brilliantly eye-catching choice, and the ‘Second Chances’ tagline sets it all off beautifully.

Everyone knows how much I love Chris Samnee’s work, and this is a perfect illustration of just why I’m such a huge fan.  We’re treated to his trademark bold line work and tremendous grasp of anatomy as DD twists in the air, coupled with the sense of motion and energy of the brilliantly old-school Silver Surfer. This cover sets out the stall beautifully about just what to expect inside the comic, and provides yet another brilliantly poster-worthy image from Mr Samnee.

X-Men (Marvel Comics)

Shamefully, this isn’t a comic I’ve actually taken time to read since it recently started, in spite of the overwhelming waves of positivity surrounding it.  That said, I don’t really need to know much about the goings on of the comic to appreciate the quality of this particular cover.  The relationship between Wolverine and Jubilee has always been one I p[articularly enjoyed, and seeing him playing the comforting, protective role here instantly caught my eye.  A great, emotive piece of work by Mr Dodson.

Despite the title itself losing my interest slightly in recent weeks, there’s no denying the innate awesomeness of this cover.  I mean, just look.  The Hulk, riding a… dinosaur?!?  Not sure it gets much cooler than that.  A brilliantly detailed piece with some great colour work, and… did I mention? THE HULK RIDING A DINOSAUR!!  Brilliant.

Cover of the Week

Batwoman (DC Comics)

Pretty much from the first issue, J.H. Williams III’s Batwoman title has easily been one of the most beautiful comics on the shelves, and that trend continues here with an piece of artwork that’s equal parts beautiful, twisted and downright disturbing.  The straightforward colour palette only adds to the eye-catching appeal, and the cover actually takes a while for you to fully absorb just how much is truly going on with it.  A brilliant piece of art that just so happens to also be a comicbook cover, and a worthy winner this week.

And that’s all, folks.  Feel free to agree, disagree or suggest covers of your own.  And I’ll see you kids next week for another round of comic book eye candy.
