Artist: Rob Williams
My first impressions of this book is I would say get some background before picking this up if you aren’t acquainted. It is not a good jumping on point in any way but that is somewhat understandable since it is six issues in and the bookend of an arc.
But I had read the first 2 issues out of interest after reading Dynamites crossover miniseries Masks and had a basic grasp of Miss Fury and even I found myself getting confused. Time is being changed and it is inferred at parts that maybe Miss Fury imagined parts of her past. Which was the main reason I couldn’t connect with it and felt out of my depth since I was missing details leading into this. I imagine it would be harder for someone who had picked up this issue as their first Miss Fury comic.
But in spite of that Writer Rob Williams also delivers on giving readers a pulpy WWII set heroine that is in a similar vain to your Dr. Jones or Wonder Woman but is in and of herself a fresh character which can’t be easy since she is over 70 years old. So it isn’t entirely inaccessible to new readers. The ending leaves a fairly decent hook going forward with the title into the next arc.
The artwork itself is by Marcio Abreu is nice but could make better use of the pulpy kinda vibe this title should have, Perhaps we will see this in later issues now that the first arc is out of the road. As with most Dynamite comics there is also a choice of covers and they are all well done but I am more inclined to towards the SEAN CHEN cover which is just more striking.
So if you aren’t already reading this then this may not be for you, But keep your eyes out for issue 7 which starts the next arc.
