Yesterday, I did not know what a ‘Brony’ was. Today I do. I still do not count myself among their number, but having read My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I can see the appeal.

Of course, you get the standard, colourful kiddie fare as the cast recount a sweet and humorous tale from high school, but writer Katie Cook is smart enough to realise that grown-ups read this book too, seamlessly dropping in stuff throughout the issue to entertain us adults, including a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Grease reference, and even quoting a Bruce Springsteen lyric in one panel, which definitely went a long way towards getting this reviewer on-side.

As you would expect with a child-friendly book, some of the dialogue is a little ‘easy-to-read’, but these moments are rare, and once the story gets going, you really stop noticing them.

Friendship is Magic is easily the most brightly coloured comic I have ever read, and some will find the pinks, purples and blues a little sickly, but Andy Price’s artwork is perfect for My Little Pony, so the elements blend very well to add to the overall fun tone of the book.

I didn’t think I would like this book, but it won me over. Put simply, there is something here for everyone who allows themselves to be entertained. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is for kids and adults alike, and the backup story featuring the ponies’ favourite role-playing-game will definitely give nerdier readers a chuckle. I know because I am one.

Rating: 8/10.
