‘Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight’ hits the ground running. And buzzing.
I don’t normally read horror comics. I’m your standard capes-punching-spaceships kinda guy, but HOLY CRAP did I enjoy this! This is the first issue in Dark Horse’s new B-movie inspired anthology series, and the first part of the 2-part arc titled ‘Bee Vixens from Mars’. Yup, Bee Vixens from Mars. It’s already awesome.
The concept is great, Alex de Campi’s writing drives everything along at a perfect pace, and Chris Peterson’s art suits this title down do the ground. His use of cloudless, open skies in the background of one scene especially adds a remote-ness to the setting which otherwise would not be obvious, and his dark, shadowy pages provide a great contrast to his daytime scenes when everything is bright, sunny and un-menacing.
Each arc in this title will be across two issues, and will feature a different artist, so if this isn’t up your street, there may still be room for enjoyment down the road. For a title inspired by B-movies, all the essential ingredients are here. Sleaze, violence, horror, and deliberately-so-bad-its-good dialogue all mix perfectly to bring you a comic that is effortlessly fun, cool, and downright bat-shit mental!
Rating: 8/10.
