Chew is one of those marmite books, you either love it or hate it. Personally, I think it’s one of the most original books out there and have used it to get people into comics in the first place! That being said, the book is now so balls-deep into the story that there really is no good jumping on point, and this issue is no exception.
To keep it spoiler free, I can’t talk about anything story-wise, except that it follows on directly from last issue (funny that). However, that being said, I can talk about how good Layman’s writing is, as he manages to pull the story together in a way few can, wibbily-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff aside, it all come across as making sense in a weird way, and his dialog is spot in as ever.
Rob Guillory’s art is still coming on leaps and bounds since the series started, and once again he puts up an awesome splash page, reminiscent of the first issue when Tony ‘takes a bite’.
While new readers will be totally lost, the new ‘Omnivore Edition’ also comes out this week so could be taken advantage of, and readers of old will feel right at home.
