With it being October all the publishers are looking to cash in and get those shelves stocked with the suitably macabre. Just one of these [from Dynamite of course] is this horror fan baiting one shot featuring everyone’s favourite S-Mart employee Ash Williams transplanted into Lovecraftian times.
We have seen the Evil Dead’s one man monster wrecking crew transplanted into other horror franchises in the past so how well does it work here?
Well I found Herbert West and Ash’s pairing a tenuous one and just didn’t see this title gelling like has been done in the past with other Evil Dead crossovers. Now it probably shouldn’t have to be pointed out but this is the Herbert West of the series and not the updated cult movie so clearly these are two very different men. Sure there is some “I don’t get that reference you made, oddly dressed future man” kind of stuff in here but I only found it serviceable… A word I hate using but it fits here. The story itself just felt limited and lacking much suspense the very fact the non-living but still moving don’t feature that heavily makes this more underwhelming. In fact aside from the ending there is little spilled viscera at all.
So I will just finish by saying the real appeal here will be to fans and there is of course the obligatory references to stuff for fans of the mythos or movies , Only knowing both on a superficial level all I can do is restate what I have said and that I was underwhelmed by the title and it isn’t that the book is poor as the art is nice and for what it is worth the story is kept tightly to the canon of Reanimator but I have to ask myself but does it bring anything to new to either?
