The term “filler” is thrown about a lot these days. Usually in a negative sense, to denote an issue that contributes nothing to the over-arching story of a series. I think this is wrong. A filler issue can be the delicious bacon in-between the two slices of plot-bread, and that’s exactly what we have here in More Than Meets The Eye #22.
The central conceit of this issue is that Rewind, given his penchant for recording EVERYTHING, had been tasked with making a film about the Lost Light crew and their quest to find the Knights of Cybertron. It plays out like a found-footage film, featuring interviews with the crew cut into events that had previously only been mentioned as having occurred off-screen.
Art this issue is handled by James Raiz, returning to the IDW universe after his stint on Spotlight: Sixshot a few years ago. He manages to stick close to the books iconic Alex Milne-style while bringing his own grittiness to the book. Josh Burcham, the series regular colourist, ensures that the tones of the issue fit right into regular series.
We get a lot of delightful character moments, a lot of call-backs to previous issues and more than little bit of foreshadowing. Regular readers of my posts will know how much I love this book and I’m pleased to give it high praise after last months slightly lacklustre conclusion to Remain in Light. Next up is Dark Cybertron #1, the start of the first crossover between the two Transformers books so it’s fair to say this issue is most definitely the quiet before the storm, but sometimes a little bit of quiet is exactly what you need!
Rating: 8/10.
