A comic I seem to run out of superlatives to describe on a monthly basis, Daredevil continues its terrific run here with an issue that perfectly summarises exactly what’s so great about this series. It’s serious without becoming dour or joyless, and funny without sacrificing the story amidst a sea of slapstick and puns. The artwork is beautiful. The writing is sharp. Simply put, it’s a swashbuckling superhero title in every sense of the word, with boundless creativity leaping at you from almost every single page.
This issue covers a lot of ground, advancing and referencing a wide variety of different storyline threads without ever feeling rushed or crowded. We get a terrific look at long-time DD adversary Jester; the Sons of the Serpent storyline is given yet another twist; we’re treated to an extremely amusing Doctor Strange cameo, and the Foggy situation is pushed forwards ever so slightly.
The whole team is working together beautifully here, from Waid’s sharp writing to Samnee’s basic but extremely expressive artwork, to Javier Rodriguez’ brilliant colours and Joe Caramagna’s creative lettering. The book also boasts a fantastic second half filled with the title’s typical level of slightly tongue-in-cheek misdirection, some gloriously Halloween’y shenanigans, and a jolting cliffhanger that ramps up the drama and makes picking up the next issue an absolute necessity.
With the series set to conclude (though hopefully not for too long) with its 36th issue, there’s just enough time for you to pick up the remaining few issues and see just what all the fuss is about. Seriously, you won’t regret it.
