An interesting piece of news in regards to San Diego Comic Con ticket prices was announced via Comic Con International’s blog. In it they revealed that for 2014 there will be no weekend tickets/Badges instead the event will be priced per day ticket.

The specified reason for this being that it is beneficial for fans but color us skeptical.

In the blog post they said;

“The decision to move from a 4-Day badge option to single day badge options was to give each attendee more flexibility when purchasing. Since we no longer offer a discount for purchasing all four days, the 4-Day option was repetitive and often lead to people purchasing a 4-Day badge despite not needing to attend every day. We hope this change will allow attendees to purchase only the days they truly need and maximize the number of people who can get a badge to attend Comic-Con.”

Now it is no secret that typically the Sunday of the event sees a drop in the people there than previous days, It is one of the main draws on the Sunday along with end of con discounts. Rather than the hustle and bustle of crowds from previous days, Fighting the force of bodies in front of them to get a seat at a movie studio panel or that one time only limited edition collectible.

But looking at ticket prices from last year one will see that for a standard 4 day pass it costs $150, However 1 day passes were $40, This is effectively adding another $10 per customer looking for the full con weekend (or 4 days). An interesting thing of note by Screen Rant was that more customers coming in helps contribute individual tourist spend to the recently announced expansion of the arena.

Thus capacity can increase and they can sell even more tickets, The main reason to be skeptical must surely be if as Comic Con International is to be believed and they are simply looking to discourage unnecessary greed of tickets, Then Raising the 4 day pass prices and lowering the single day pass would surely then encourage people to pick the cheaper day option in the necessary multiples without effectively increasing the price.

I flagged the story with BCP team member Greg who has visited the event in the past, He also agreed with this point of view and believed that this is purely about boosting profit on tickets as opposed to helping fans out.

But for most of us the con will remain a pipe dream as tickets sell out far in advance the actual event. But how will this affect those of you in attendance of the event?
