Legenderry02-Cov-BenitezPublisher: Dynamite Comics
Writer: Bill Willingham
Artist: Sergio Fernandez Davilla
Release Date: 12th February 2014

Oh dear. I really wanted to like this, being a big fan of steampunk as a genre and the idea of all of Dynamite’s top characters clashed together in an alternate universe full of cogs and tesla coils sounds pretty cool. In a way, it should be as cool as, say, Marvel 1602 was.

Sadly not.

The writing is pedestrian and doesn’t really get you caring about what’s happening and there is plenty of action going on, but it comes across like the kind of movie you go to expecting more from the CGI than the acting.

Sad to say, the CGI here isn’t great either. The artwork is good, but in a dated way and the whole ‘steampunk’ setting seems almost like an afterthought, with elements like airships and intricate eyeglasses plonked in amidst vistas and outfits that didn’t really inspire me.

To be honest, the whole thing seems a bit forced and combined with the artwork puts me in mind of a group of folks playing 7th Sea while calling themselves Green Hornet, Vampirella etc.

Definitely not essential reading.

Rating: 2/5.
