Dark Horse ‘s Creepy relaunch continues in typically twisted style in this third volume, which collects issues 10-13 of the anthology series.

With big names like Richard Corben, Mike Mignola, Darick Robertson and Gilbert Hernandez all making appearances, this is a seriously strong collection, particularly in the art department.

Issue 10 is the pick of the bunch, being an all-Lovecraft special. The bulk of the content is taken up by an extra-length tale by one of the all-time great writer and artist teams, Doug Moench and Kelley Jones.

The pair’s macabre style is perfectly suited to their story of the real HP Lovecraft’s slow descent into madness and beyond as what he thought were his fictional creations seem to be horrifyingly real. Jones’ art absolutely shines here, the artist clearly relishing depicting every tentacle and impossibly angled environment.

Most anthology titles are patchy affairs, but this is a particularly strong collection that any horror comic aficionado should be reserving a place on their shelf for.

Rating: 4/5.
