The new teaser trailer for FX’s The Strain gives us an eye full of how the infection spreads. Kind of like the Animorphs’ Yeerks, but I digress. Having not read Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain, I checked in with Wikipedia, which provided the following summary on the contagion:
The vector for vampirism is a capillary worm, which, once introduced into the human host’s bloodstream (either through a vampire’s feeding or direct invasion by the worm through a wound or orifice), introduces an incurable and fast-acting virus. By manipulating the host’s genes, the virus causes a human to undergo numerous radical physical changes.
That description suggests this series won’t be for the squeamish. We knew we weren’t getting Twilight vampires; I mean the vampires defecate while feeding. If the show sticks to its source material, then viewers will get an in depth look at the meticulous biology that make the creatures of the night tick.
With any luck there should be a full trailer soon since The Strain is scheduled for the summer 2014 on FX. Knowing Guillermo del Toro, the practical effects and design for the vampires should be the stuff of nightmares, which should hold horror fans till The Walking Dead returns in October.
If you’ve read the books or the graphic novels sound off in the comments below on which scenes you hope to see adapted on this television series.
