It’s been a long road. Two short, albeit rat infested, commercials and ten teaser trailers later, but we finally get a full length trailer for The Strain.

The Strain is a book trilogy written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, which would go on to be adapted into graphic novels via Dark Horse Comics. Now FX has placed a 13-episode order for the drama series. The official synopsis from FX:

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Co-Creators, Excetuive Producers and Writers del Toro and Hogan co-wrote the pilot script for The Strain, which was directed by del Toro. Emmy Award winning Writer and Producer Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) serves as Executive Producer/Showrunner and Writer.  Cuse added, ”…The Strain starts as a chilling and compelling story that will upend everything you thought you knew about vampires.”

If you’ve read the series or seen the comic, then you know these aren’t “glamorous” Twilight vampires. These creatures of the night defecate while feeding, so it will be (interesting?) to see how FX handles that whole process. We don’t see any of the vampires up close; however, we do get a peek into what the extendable proboscis/stingers will look like, with them resembling the parasite’s mouth or the Reapers from Blade II. This series promises to be a terrifying experience, considering Guillermo’s reputation in the horror genre and his eye for monsters.

A lot of the teasers go out of their way to warn us that “He is here,” and the trailer reveals a bald possibly giant monster, which could potentially turn out to be Jusef Sardu (I won’t spoil it here, but you can Google it if you want to).

It stars Corey Stoll, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland, and Miguel Gomez. Professor Abraham Setrakian was originally played by John Hurt, but has been replaced with Game of Thrones’ David Bradley.

The Strain airs on Sunday July 13th on FX.
