First things first, god damn this is one pretty book. Jason Howard has done an incredible job in creating beautiful landscapes and stunning buildings with an attention to detail that really does shine through. Sadly though, I still just don’t ‘get’ the story. It’s still meanders in a way that I’m not finding unpleasant, but until the latter half of the issue I just fail to see the point?
Ellis has created something very strange here, with the result that I still want to read the book, and have enjoyed it up until now, but I couldn’t really tell you why, or even what it’s about apart from the “Trees” aspect of it. I say up until now, but what I really mean is up until the first half of the book, because there actually seems to be an ongoing narrative in this issue! Previous issues have been hindered by the lack of story and development for the characters, but this time we only focus on two (well, really only one by the end) and the book benefits greatly from it.
In summary; still don’t get it, still beautiful, but maybe wait for the trade so you get the whole story?
Rating: 3/5.
