With the events that took place at the end of last issue, I was expecting us to kick off here with a conversation between Harold and Drum; this however did not go down. What we do get, however, is a quick look at just how Harold became the Pink Cat spirit that he is. It’s just a quick glimpse and at first read I wasn’t exactly sure what was gong on, but I went back and re-read the last issue and put two and two together that the opening sequence is Harold. Not only do we get a little more back-story on Harold yet again this issue, but also we are introduced to a new character that seems to know a lot more about Drum, possibly more than Drum even knows about himself. Though I didn’t feel like this issue did much to advance the current story arc, I thought it did well to highlight and hint at Harold and Drum’s past.
Rossmo continues to keep my interest in this story even though at times I am confused to the point where I have pretty much no idea what is transpiring on the page. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, as it keeps me thinking, guessing and paying close attention to the story, which in itself is no easy feat as with many comics you can find yourself mindlessly flicking through, going through the motions without paying close attention. With Drumhellar you have to continue to pay attention, or you will feel as though you are right along on a trip with Drum.
The trips themselves are becoming a little predictable, but each one has it’s own unique aftermath that make them visually different every time. So even though the trips are a tad more predictable and expected, this doesn’t impact them to the point where they take away from the story. Not only does Rossmo continue to keep my interest in the twisted tales of Drum Hellar, but also his artwork still pops and catches my eye. Each trip alone is a new avenue for Rossmo to show his skills and just wow us with what he can throw on a page.
Rating: 3/5.
