The final issue of Witch of Harju has came round, and boy does it not hold back. The level of visceral gore in the series is so much more than in any other Mignola book in recent memory, but Bergting manages to make it so it’s not overbearing or detracting from the story the artwork has to tell.
We hit the ground running this time round with the climactic fight against the undead as Baltimore chases down the Witch. The pace did seem a bit off with this one, with the choice to split the action between the two groups making things slightly jarring. That being said, its still a damn finely crafted story, with enough hints for recurring characters, tied up plot points and, all in all, a good solid end.
Bergting is an artist I wasn’t familiar with before, but will most definitely be looking out for in the future; with rough lines and violent spurts aplenty I’ve been sold on his art from the get go. His work within the Forrest was stunning and rough at the same time, with the ever present Dave Stewart knocking it out the park as ever with his fantastic colours.
Minor negatives aside, it’s a solid finish to a great arc and the addition of Christopher Golden writing alongside Mignola gives the series a fresher feel, and a real horror/supernatural touch that will make fans of the genre hard by the end.
