A man lives alone, isolated, by a beach. All is calm until there’s a knock at the door. Denise, a late teen punches the man as he opens the door. It seems the man is a deadbeat Dad and Denise is his abandoned daughter resurfaced to tell him that his wife, her mum, has died and she has tracked him down for payback. Not wholly an unfamiliar path.
Dad frantically asks how she tracked him down and almost as she tells him, men in an ominous black sedan turn up at the door. Dad and daughter make a run for it and at a local cafe, he tells her that he used to be a bad guy and people are after him. I won’t say anymore as you can probably add more to it yourself – it’s not an original premise after all. But needless to say Denise has some surprises for dear ol’ Dad.
Despite it not being an original premise, I really enjoyed the comic. It’s fresh enough that I was left wondering where the story was going to go. Also, bad guy number 1 refers to Dad as the East Side Butcher. Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s enough to hook me. I am just hoping it’s not yet another Henry Hill/ Mafia story.
The artwork is solid and stern. Scenes by the beach and in the diner are particularly well realised. I think we might be in for a treat here.
Rating: 4/5.
