Ceej Picks… 26th November 2014
It can sometimes be difficult to keep track of all the comics being released – something we’re acutely aware of here at the Big Comic Page, as we regularly find ourselves getting a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles being released on a weekly basis. Well, to help try and ease your pain a little, I’ve decided to start helping you guys out by recommending some titles that I think are pretty much “must buys” for this coming Wednesday. These will tend to be ongoing series’ where I’ve loved the previous issues, or debuting titles where the premise and/or creative team is simply too good to miss.
Let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these picks, and please feel free to suggest some “must buy” titles of your own!
Colder: The Bad Seed #2 (Dark Horse Comics) – Paul Tobin, Juan Ferreyra
It’s no secret how much I loved the previous series of Colder, and the first issue of this latest ongoing series grabbed my attention right from the get-go with its deeper insights into the lives of Reece and Declan, along with a brand new, utterly terrifying adversary. Any time these two creators come together it’s something truly special, and Colder is a horror comic unlike anything else on the shelves right now.
Aliens: Fire and Stone #3 (of 4) (Dark Horse Comics) – Chris Roberson, Patric Reynolds
Dark Horse’s ‘Fire and Stone’ event has been of the highest quality so far, with each of the four arcs adding something different to the ongoing narrative. This Wednesday sees the release of the next instalment of the ‘Haunted House’ horror of the Aliens series, with Roberson’s confident narrative and Reynolds’ scratchy, unnerving visuals all but guaranteed to impress.
Gotham by Midnight #1 (DC Comics) – Ray Fawkes, Ben Templesmith
Ben Templesmith on Gotham? Shut up and take my money. The disturbing artwork of Templesmith, as seen in titles such as Ten Grand, 30 Days of Night and Squidder, seems tailor-made for the imposing architecture and menacing shadows of Gotham, making this a book I’ve been eagerly anticipating for quite some time.
Superior Foes of Spider-Man #17 (Marvel Comics) – Nick Spencer, Steve Lieber
It is with a heavy heart that I get ready to read the final issue of Spencer and Lieber’s stellar series. Often described by the creators as “the best series you’re not reading”, the witty, humorous exploits of the Sinister Six (five? four!?) has been an absolute joy to read, and I have no doubt that this creative team is fully intent on going out with a bang. An example of just how awesome comics can truly be. Get it bought!
Pirouette #2 (Black Mask Studios) – Mark L. Miller, Carlos Granda
Black Mask Studios are one of the most exciting things to happen to comics for quite some time, churning out inventive, exciting and innovative titles from their impressive stable of creators. The first issue of Pirouette – the tale of a downtrodden Circus clown dreaming her way out of her violent, abusive life – was utterly mesmerising, and I have no doubt that Miller and Granda’s second offering will maintain that same high standard. Jump on this bandwagon before it runs you over, guys!
