If we’re being honest, it’s not as if gamers have been hard done by in recent years when it comes to Batman games. Since 2009, the Arkham series has successfully delivered the Dark Knight videogame experience we all hoped for, and then some.
It’s probably not too surprising then, that when F.3.A.R. developer Day 1 Studios pitched a game based on the Elseworlds tale Gotham by Gaslight in 2009, publisher THQ struggled to obtain the necessary licensing. With the Eidos-published Batman: Arkham Asylum already riding high on the Game of the Year lists, it’s likely Warner Bros. knew exactly what basket they were keeping their Bat-eggs in.
That doesn’t mean a Gotham by Gaslight game couldn’t have been very interesting, though. Day 1’s pitch kept Jack The Ripper as the story’s antagonist, and early prototype footage (below) looked very promising, with a style that brings to mind the Assassin’s Creed series, and some very pretty cape physics.
Additionally, concept art released by artist Julie A. Farrell added a steampunk vibe to the game’s design.
It’s probably safe to say that we’ll never see a Gotham by Gaslight videogame, but we can’t help but wonder what other stories we’d like to see incorporated into future Batman games. KnightsEnd, anyone?
