Marvel Comics have just announced that, as part of the publisher’s upcoming Secret Wars event, the Ultimate and Marvel Universes will “smash together”, ending both of them and creating a new, unified universe called “Battleworld”.
Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel broke down the decision, saying “The Ultimate Universe, the Marvel Universe, they’re going to slap together. Imagine two pizzas: They’re going to combine toppings, some toppings are going to drop off. And that is the Marvel Universe moving forward. It’s more than the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe, it’s all the universes you can imagine. That is the Marvel Universe going forward.”
Senior Vice President of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort clarified, adding “Once we hit Secret Wars #1, there is no Marvel Universe, Ultimate Universe, or any other. It’s all Battleworld.”
Alonso continued “We’re launching a wealth of new series, both ongoing and minis, during Secret Wars”, and also hinted at some bigger changes, teasing the fans by adding “If we wanted to resurrect Gwen Stacy, this would be the place to do it.”
Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day 2015 offering, Secret Wars #0, will be used for readers to catch up on what’s been happening in the Marvel Universe before it – well – ends in Secret Wars #1.
The duo also promised that Marvel would be releasing an interactive “map” of sorts breaking down the geography of Battleworld and which titles will be featuring which characters.
So, big changes for sure, but what do you guys think of this announcement? Good or bad, yay or nay, let us know in the comments.
