IMG_7247There was speculation as to whether or not Man of Steel would kick off DC’s broader cinematic universe, and in October Warner Bros revealed their full movie lineup, including Batman V Superman, a two part Justice League movie event, The Suicide Squad, and solo movies for the various Justice League members.

Even though Wonder Woman is the first name on the list of solo films, her enemy Aquaman (read: Flashpoint) has a lot more rumors surfacing at the moment. The King of Atlantis has been a major focus for DC Comics recently, from Geoff Johns’ redefinition of Aquaman in the New 52 to the animated feature length film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.

So, to recap, here’s what we know so far;

  • Jason Momoa has been cast for the role of Arthur Curry a.k.a. Aquaman.
  • The expected release date is July 27th, 2018.

IMG_7250And here are the rumors that are currently circulating on the net;

  • Warner Bros has commissioned two Aquaman scripts one written by Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and the other by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) in an attempt to “play it safe”.
  • Conveniently enough, the shortlist for potential directors has two names. First Jeff Nichols (Mud) who has worked with Michal Shannon (Man of Steel) a number of times. However, the other candidate, director Noam Murro worked with Snyder and Johnstad on 300: Rise of an Empire, and if trends are an indication of things to come, then Johnstad’s script is be favored to win.
  • And the latest tidbit is a casting rumor. Karl Urban (Dredd) is rumored to be playing Aquaman’s half-brother Orm (a.k.a. Ocean Master).

IMG_7249Unfortunately there are a lot more unknowns for the time being, but if there’s any truth to these rumors we can expect some big waves from this film – especially if Murro is given the chance to direct. While 300: Rise of an Empire was a little so-so, the high seas setting and all-out war sequences are most certainly within the director’s wheelhouse.

So, do you agree Murro is the best choice for this film or is he out of his league with Nichols in the running? And what are your thoughts on the possibility of Karl Urban facing off with Jason Momoa? Sound off in the comments below.
