Another Zombie book? rWell yes, but this one has a twist. The titular Blind refers to the zombies of the book who hunt on sound and smell and – for reasons as yet unknown – tear out their own eyes! However, like all good zombie books this isn’t about them, it’s about the people tying to survive in this new and horrific world as they try to scavenge for food, clothing, supplies and possibly even a cure.

Jack Lothian has penned more than a few comics and TV Shows over the past few years, and I have to say that I really like his style. He goes in and gets all the points across; his stories have a beginning, a middle and an end and – most importantly – he actually makes you care about his characters. However, to me, this book every so slightly misses the mark – something of a rarity for him. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and the story was compelling enough to make me want to continue to issue two and three, I just felt that the fast pace of the story overshadowed the characters themselves somewhat.

You may have previously seen Alan Brown’s artwork in BHP’s The Heather Ale (also penned by Lothian). Now I have to admit that when I saw the first page I initially wasn’t keen, but his style very quickly grew on me and his depiction of the ‘Blind’ themselves is nothing short of terrifyingly beautiful! The use of the colours around them makes your skin go cold just looking at one. One criticism I have about his work is that he drew two characters very similarly, causing me some trouble to tell them apart until I went back and re-read some parts.

Overall however, I definitely liked what I was reading, and feel that it has all the building blocks required to develop into a truly great comic. It opens up a lot of questions and leaves you an a cliffhanger. My only complaint was the pace of action and the minor confusion between the characters (mainly due to the lighting).  However, before I finish, I will say one more thing… WHAT A COVER! Seriously, that baby alone should make you want to read this book.

Rating: 3/5.
