Big Comic Page are saddened to hear of the passing of British comics legend Brett Ewins. The massively talented artist made his name on 2000AD classics such Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd and Anderson: Psi Division before developing his signature strip for the title with writer Pete Milligan, the grim yet warped future war story Bad Company.
Outside of 2000 AD, Brett was responsible, alongside Steve Dillon, for the creation of Deadline magazine. A game-changer in the world of British comics, it launched the career of folk like Jamie Hewlett, Nick Abadzis and Glyn Dillon, as well as featuring Ewins’ own creation (again with Milligan in writing duties) hard-nosed private eye Johnny Nemo.
The magazine had an open submission policy and Brett’s generosity with his time and experience in regard to both young creators and fans says a lot about how much of a gentleman he was.
One of the true greats of British comics, Brett Ewins brought a punk rock aesthetic to everything he worked on and was a real one-off. The comics industry is a lot poorer without him.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
