Like every good teen tale with a Camp Greenlake kind of twist, this comic begins with some incredibly irritating teens. Within the first few pages the dialogue is bombarded with “bae”, “OMG”, “totes” and “totes adorbs” which is reserved for the sighting of a nun. I understand, nuns are cute…and spooky. The creators of this comic either want you to hate these teens or weave a massive turnaround by the event(s) that unfolds.
The event is a bus crash. Teens, Ivy League wannabes, looking for something to add to their college applications go on a do-gooder adventure. Y’know the kind: gap year, building water-wells, outward bound…here it’s Latin America and some dodgy people are along for the ride, including the suspicious nun. Cue bus crash. Broken teens. Circling coyotes. Oh, and a suitcase full of white powder and I don’t think it is Johnson & Johnson’s.
This is a fun read and while I hated the modern, teen lingo – really, hated it – it does serve a purpose. There’s nothing more irritating than teens and their spectacular use of English. There’s definite feel of teen slasher flicks when you just know those carefree smiles and obsession over trivialities are on a ticking clock.
The artwork and layout embraces the bright, modern feel of the dialogue. We get texts, emails and even a Facebook page in which the creator credits are included. It’s not a new thing but it adds to the fun and presumably post-crash when all these doodahs are unavailable, we will feel the teens’ isolation more. It will be interesting to see.
N.B I don’t think this series will go ‘slasher’, I was just hopeful.
Rating: 3/5.
