The latest issue of Shaper from Dark Horse Comics starts with us learning why the Spyr’s species is being hunted. I won’t spoil that here, as I imagine it will be a big plot point later in the series. After all the action of the last two issues this one slowed down noticeable in order to provide some exposition. It was a necessary – but not entirely welcomed – change, and one that ended up feeling more like an emergency stop than a smooth gear change.

The artwork maintained the high standard of the previous two issues, and I’m really keen to see how the story plays out given the revelation contained within these pages.  If Shaper continues on its current trajectory I can see it becoming a cult hit. The characters seem to get deeper every time they speak, giving them significantly more nuance than the average comic character.

Simply put, I recommend picking this book up now and getting in on the ground floor of this fantastic series before you end up being left behind.

Rating: 4/5.
