55a4217d1400005f0d9a7f03Lost in the din of trailers and leaked trailers over the course of last weekend’s Comic Con International in San Diego, DC announced that Vixen, its first black female superhero, is set to star in a brand new online animated web series on digital platform CW Seed.

The titular hero, Mari McCabe, is a young woman originally from Africa who becomes super-heroine Vixen after a mysterious magical necklace is left to her following her parents’ death.

Encouragingly for the series, Marc Guggenheim, writer and producer for both “The Flash” and “Arrow” TV series, has been announced to be overseeing the project. It was also confirmed that episodes of the series will feature characters from “The Flash” and “Arrow.”

While superheroes of colour are (albeit slightly) on the rise lately, black superheroines are still massively under-represented, so having a black female lead in a series like this serves as a significant step forward for DC, and for comics as a whole.

Check out the sneak peak trailer for the series below.
