The previous issue of Citizen Jack caught me completely off guard. I went in bare, not knowing what to expect and came out with tears of joy streaming down my face from laughing so hard. But not only was it funny – it couldn’t have come along at a better time, given that the current US Presidential Campaign is currently in full-swing and creating the wrong kinds of headlines, mainly due to a certain candidate. Much like that candidate, our titular character here is an unfiltered, politically incorrect buffoon. The comparisons between this and real life are purely coincidental, but it makes for some hilarious satire that’s truly relevant to what’s going on right now.
The previous issue ended with disgraced former politician and current alcoholic snow blower salesman Jack making a Faustian pact with a demon to become President. As you do.
In this issue, he finds himself trailing behind by a large margin in the polls, and to achieve ‘’electability’’, he must take the fight to the opposition – not that fighting should be a problem for Jack, given that he’s a local ice hockey legend who holds the record for most time spent in the penalty box, after all.
This issue has cemented Citizen Jack as one of the greatest releases this year. In terms of all-out comedy there hasn’t been any better. This is a story written by a man who’s angry at the state of his country, but he’s able to channel it in a way that’s entertaining for readers of all persuasions. Entertainment comes first and foremost, but the underlying rage gives it added energy. The underlying issues touched upon by Citizen Jack are thought provoking, giving us some things to think about once the laughter has decided if we choose to.
Does Sam Humphries have a message he’s trying to get across with Citizen Jack? Absolutely. But he’s not trying to enforce his beliefs on anybody either. This is shaping up to be one of the best political satires of the 21st century from any medium – comics, movies, television… you name it. Citizen Jack is a laugh-a-minute hoot with a fire lit under it, and it could not have come along at a better time.
May this be your companion piece to the Presidential Campaign if it means anything to you. If not, it works as a universal comedy for both the politically engaged and apathetic alike.
