Once again it’s time for Team BCP to take a combined look at one of this Wednesday’s releases in our weekly “Roundtable Review”.

As always, our team only has a maximum of fifty words to share their thoughts on the latest offering, and this week we’re talking a look at the first issue of Alex Paknadel and Artyom Trakhanov’s Turncoat from BOOM! Studios.

300 years since humanity was brutally subjugated by the alien race known simply as the Management. Two years since these invaders abandoned Earth to return to their home world. Following her participation in the brutal massacre of human-alien hybrids left behind by the Management, resistance fighter Marta Gonzalez declines to join the new human government and starts her own private detective agency instead. Gonzalez is forced to confront her own bloody past and acknowledge the fact that the transition from oppression to emancipation is anything but clean.

“Unusual, complex and a bit hard to follow at first, but I think there may be something here. A different take to the invasion / resistance trope, I liked it. Chaotic, yet stunning art showing an unsettling hybridisation of the human race in the future. Great use of interesting panel layouts.” (3.5/5) – Andrew McGlinn

“A scatty start works best when the protagonist knows as much as the reader. I had to read it twice to get any idea of the plot, but she seemed to know everything. The artwork and idea is good, but poorly executed in my opinion.” (1/5) – David Gladman

“Some gorgeously striking art with a fascinating premise and some gooily cool biotech ideas are unfortunately undercut by an oddly executed narrative structure. This is offset somewhat by sharp dialogue, but still a bit of difficult one to follow properly with just this issue. Worth a look for the art.” (2/5) – Ross Sweeney

“Science fiction, social structures and crime noir come together in this intriguing new series. The crisp artwork and slick dialogue overcome a somewhat muddled narrative to really get the hooks in, and the world building on display here is truly top-notch. Definitely a grower rather than a shower for now.” (4/5) – Craig Neilson-Adams

OVERALL RATING: 2.6/5.
