I had heard of the ‘Rivers of London Series’ but had never reached for any of the books. So I was curious as to how this adaptation would translate as a comic rather than a novel.
Set between the 5th book of the series ‘Foxglove Summer’ and the 6th ‘The Hanging Tree’, this tale orbits on the main character of the series Peter Grant. Peter for those unfamiliar with his tale is a MET police officer (and part time wizard) serving in The Folly (Department for Magical Crimes) whose boss happens to be the last Fully trained wizard in the country. Oh and did I mention that Peter’s other half happens to be a river goddess (think of NYPD Blue meets Harry Potter)?
In this story Peter is investigating a missing child, a mythical woodland beast, the Russian Mafia and of course an imprisoned Russian witch. Just another day in the office?
I started this book 4 issues in which is a challenge as you have to get to know familiar characters almost to the peak of the story and If I’m honest this wasn’t a problem. Aaronovotch and Cartmel have written the characters very well (as you would from an established cast) and it is easy to read and pick up the story.
Sadly for me the story itself didn’t grab me, even after going back and reading the first 3 issues. That said what it has done is made me curious about the origins of this world. Guess I’m off to a bookshop to get the 1st novel?
Rating: 3/5.
