In the past few years, zombies have taken over the world. Seriously with the walking dead going stratospheric zombies have overtaken sparkly vampires as the new cool! But I miss the good old days (of the living dead). When lifeless corpses shuffled along like a hungover Scotsman the morning after Hogmanay.

And within a first few flicks of the pages my nostalgic nerves were being tickled. We have old school zombies, in fact we have a scene lifted straight from Dawn of the Dead and the tone is set. This zombie story isn’t going to be as bleak or as realistic as the walking dead series takes itself. It’s a good old fashioned undead romp!

The story is simple, 2 guys surviving in a city that wants to eat them, brothers in arms if you were. Then the real disaster happens, they discover a living breathing girl! 2 guys, 1 girl, millions of zombies…what could possibly go wrong??

The writing is sharp and to the point. Mike Richardson lifts some classic moments from films of the genre and I find myself quite pleased when I recognise them (almost as if I was in on the joke from the start). He doesn’t take the concept of the story too seriously and even in the dramatic moments it reads light hearted.

Ben Stenbeck’s art keeps this light hearted theme going with a great use of colours and shades that although set in a bleak and hopeless world, there is always a bright new day around the corner.

In conclusion this book is a fun read and is to the walking dead as Shaun of the Dead is to…well…the walking dead.

Rating: 4/5.
