The Wrap are reporting that Zendaya will be playing the role of “MJ” in the upcoming Sony/Marvel Studios Spider-Man: Homecoming movie.
At Comic-Con International in San Diego, director Jon Watts claimed that the 19-year-old would be playing a character called “Michelle”, but it’s now being claimed that while this appears to be true, Zendaya’s character’s nickname will indeed be “MJ”.
The initial reaction to the casting of the 19-year-old seems to be decidedly mixed, as you might expect, but we’d love to hear what you think, especially given the fact that she doesn’t necessarily seem to be playing the iconic “Mary Jane Watson” character.
Zendaya joins Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May), Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/The Vulture) and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson) in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is set to hit cinemas on July 7th, 2017.
