Vanity Fair have just confirmed that Ben Affleck will be returning to the big screen in the role of Batman in The Flash, which is currently set for a summer 2022 release.
The upcoming movie, which is based heavily on DC’s 2011 Flashpoint storyline, will see Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen breaking into the multiverse where he’ll encounter different versions of DC’s classic heroes. The film is set to be directed by Andy Muschietti.
Speaking about Affleck in the role, Muschietti said “His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable. He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”
He also stressed that this would be more than a mere cameo, adding “He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”
Affleck joins another former Batman on the cast, with Michael Keaton already confirmed to return as the Dark Knight in a “substantial” role for the upcoming Warner Bros blockbuster.
