On Friday the 16th of February 2024 at 9am PT UPDATE: release postponed until Wednesday the 21st of February at 9am PT due to issues with international shipping (CLICK HERE), Mattel are launching their latest Mattel Creations exclusive Masters of the Universe Origins figure in the form of Rokkon, one of the original “Comet Warriors” from the 1980s.

As with all of their previous Mattel Creations releases, stocks will be strictly limited for this brand new figure, so expect it to be sold out in short order after the 9am PT kickoff time.

Rokkon (and his buddy Stonedar) were released by Mattel back in 1986 as a way to compete with Hasbro’s hugely popular Transformers toy line. In an interesting move for Mattel, this new release features pretty much all new components (rather than their worrying trend of reusing and/or repainting existing parts), which means that A) there does seem to be some creativity and investment being put into the MOTU Origins line moving forwards, and B) Stonedar is surely not too far away.

As far as authenticity goes, this new release seems fairly consistent with the O.G. version, which is what we should be expecting from the Origins line at this point. I was personally never a huge fan of the Comet Warriors as a kid, but the “transforming” action, where they basically curl up into a ball to show their rocky exterior, is admittedly rather cool, if a little inelegant when compared to the Transformers they were trying to replicate.

Still, this is definitely a new release that’s likely to have some excited fans hitting refresh on the Mattel Creations Website this Friday, and while it’s not quite the Sy-Klone or Rio Blast we’ve all been waiting for, it’s still a fun addition to any Origins collector’s shelves.

Here’s the official blurb:

Thrown across the universe by the evil Hordak, the Comet Warriors landed on Eternia. The young soldier known as Rokkon and his brethren fought alongside the heroic Masters of the Universe in their battle against evil. Like all Rock People, he can fold his humanoid body into a boulder and deflect laser blasts with his rocky exterior. This figure comes with a special mini comic to help tell his story.
