Warner Bros have released some new shots of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix from “Joker: Folie à Deux”, the upcoming sequel to Todd Phillips’ billion-grossing Joker solo movie.
The original “Joker” movie hit cinemas in 2019 and brought in over $1 billion worldwide en route to becoming the highest-grossing R-rated release in box office history. The sequel sees Phoenix returning to his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, with Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, returning to direct.
Gaga’s inclusion has been a bit of a contentious topic – something the previous Joker movie was no stranger to – as are the rumours that the film will be a “musical”, something which was heavily hinted at by the film’s composer Hildur Guðnadótti in a recent interview. Certainly a bit of a departure from the dark, psychological thriller of the original, but actually something that probably fits the wild, chaotic nature of Joker and Harley’s relationship quite well.
It has also been confirmed that Zazie Beetz is set to return as Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s single mother neighbour who played a significant role in the first movie. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung and Harry Lawtey have also been cast in as-yet-undisclosed roles.
Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to hit cinemas on October 4, 2024, and the first teaser trailer is expected this April.
