Arkham Horror: The Scarlet Keys
We’ve already covered how great Arkham Horror from Fantasy Flight Games is, reviewing both the base game (CLICK HERE) and our up-to-now favourite expansion, The Dunwich Legacy (CLICK HERE), back in late 2022. However, The Scarlet Keys is something else entirely. It’s a completely non-linear campaign where you race against time around the globe choosing where to go (and which scenario to play) in order to unlock the secrets of Red Coterie.
It comes with a beautiful fold-out campaign map, and is the closest I’ve ever come to experiencing an RPG in card form – no GM, and so much autonomy it’s extraordinary. With new mechanics including hidden cards (is it an enemy agent? A decoy? Or something… OTHER?) and side missions that can be unlocked using other existing scenario packs, it feels like a proper gripping narrative, torn from the pages of Lovecraft’s journals.
A fantastically immersive experience, it’s worth also getting the Investigator expansion as much to enhance theme as anything else, although they’re not absolutely necessary to survive. Still, having the doctor to heal you and the butler for extra actions is a particular benefit in any group, whilst the politician being able to use Allies to buff test results can really help on those killer token pulls.
Also, it introduces the new Upgrade mechanic: given how restrictive XP spends on improving your Investigator and deck can feel, being able to tailor some of your resources from the outset makes for a much more personalised, and again immersive, experience.
Highly recommended, and so of course you can win a copy in our March giveaway below!
7 Wonders: Architects – Medals

The kids and I have been playing our favourite 7 Wonders game Architects with the new “Medals” expansion which adds the Ziggurat of Ur and the Colosseum of Rome. Again, it’s that rare beast, a game we can all play, from little miss (8 years old) through to the boss (who does not play games, as a rule).
Although we love the challenge and weight of 7 Wonders and the rapid cut and thrust of 7 Wonders Duel, you can’t beat seeing your physical wonder grow before your eyes. Cats continue to be the key to success, and with Ur you can now domesticate them (the cat allows you to peek at the top the card decks) and gain that as a Scientific Progress upgrade!
As well as the variety that the new Wonders add, the Medals 🏅 give you new bonus points to win by achieving objectives first, with the addition of a more Advanced version of the game where you add a further 2 Medals that anyone can grab (as opposed to just one per player).
It’s an absolute hoot, fast and fun, great for all ages!
