As reported by Deadline, Netflix have rolled the dice on ‘The Forgotten Realms’, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series from producer Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool & Wolverine), writer-showrunner Drew Crevello and Hasbro Entertainment.
A live-action D&D series has been a priority for quite a while now, and we came close back in early 2023 when the project’s initial incarnation, overseen creatively by Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, landed at Paramount+ in early 2023 with a straight-to-series order and eOne co-producing alongside Paramount Pictures. It ultimately didn’t go anywhere, although we did get Honour Among Thieves, the big-screen Dungeons and Dragons movie later that year from Paramount.
Since then, Hasbro’s in-house division Hasbro Entertainment have taken over the project, with the series undergoing some redevelopment with Crevello at the helm and a brand new concept not related to the past series or the live action movie. It then drew interest from Levy, who already have some tangential D&D involvement with his work as director/executive producer on Stranger Things, also at Netflix.
While nothing is really known about the story yet, it’s clear from the title that the series will take place in the iconic campaign setting and centerpiece of the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Expect more details coming down the line in the near future, but for now, let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this one actually makes it across the finish line.
