Writer: Mike Johnson
Artist: Efran Fajar

Part 2 of ‘The Khitomer Conflict’ continues right where the last issue left off, but while the writing is still strong, unfortunately ‘Star Trek’ is again let down by its looks.

The pacing of Star Trek feels less rushed than the first part of this arc. It’s a comfortable read this time whilst still managing to fit plenty of great story and even greater dialogue into a single issue, and it helps that Mike Johnson has these characters nailed. There are few things more fun when reading dialogue than realising you are reading it in the familiar voice of the actor who portrays the character on-screen. Such is the case here. You can actually hear Chris Pine and Zach Quinto reading this script in your head, and it feels right.

Again though, with this issue the characters’ film-likenesses badly affects the artwork. As I said last issue, it’s not necessarily Erfan Fajar’s fault, but every panel that features a member of the Enterprise crew looks like it has been drawn directly from photo reference, resulting in a lack of emotion throughout the book. Combined with backgrounds that are filled with empty space, the art in Star Trek definitely detracts from Johnson’s writing, which is still good enough to hopefully keep readers on-board.

Rating: 6/10.
