CJ’s Cover of the Week – 20th March 2013

We’re starting off a new feature this week, and the premise is a fairly simple one. Basically, I take a look at all the comics released this week – specifically at their covers – and then I pick the ones I think are the most creative, visually striking or just plain cool.  Then, we all have a chat about my choices, and you guys let me know what covers caught your eye this week. Simple, right?

Maybe it’ll work, maybe not. But there’s so much quality cover art released every week that it seems like a shame not to at least acknowledge it.

But before we get to this week’s winner, I’m going to give you four runners-up that really impressed me this week.

cover of the week

They are, reading from the top left;

Chew #32 (Image Comics)
Cover by Rob Guillory

Chew isn’t a title I’ve read much of since it initially debuted, but this is still an extremely creative, eye-catching cover that definitely got my attention as I was browsing the racks this week. Rob Guillory is one hell of an artist, and that’s most definitely on display here.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #20 (IDW)
Cover by Ben Bates & Kevin Eastman

Just an amazing cover here, with Krang clutching the tattered bandanas of our heroes. Beautifully illustrated, and if you’re not reading this title already, you really, really should be. Cracking stuff.

Batwoman #18 (DC)
Cover by Trevor McCarthy

A title I’ve heard nothing but good things about, but – sadly – haven’t had the time or money to pick up myself. Disregarding that though, this is still a colourful, striking and creative cover, and the juxtaposition between the flaming ‘skull’ motif in the foreground and the ominous Mr Freeze in the background really sold me on it.

Red Hood & The Outlaws #18 (DC)
Cover by Mico Suayan, Blond

An absolutely poster-worthy shot of the Red Hood here, and although once again this isn’t a title I’ve been keeping up with much lately, this is undoubtedly an incredibly cool image of the titular character, and if nothing else, made me take a long hard look at the book before moving on.

Some good stuff there, without about another half dozen who could have made the shortlist.

Anyway, without any further ado, this week’s winner is…

New Avengers #4 (Marvel)
Cover by Jock, Stephane Roux

An absolutely stunning cover here, and one that actually made me buy the comic just based on what I saw while flicking through the new releases. I had absolutely no idea Galactus was to be featured in this title, and having him depicted on the cover here in such an incredibly striking way was pretty much all I needed to make the purchase. The down side is, I’m probably going to have to buy a couple more issues to fill in the gaps, but if Galactus is on board, then so am I. A terrific cover, and one which most definitely did its job as far as I’m concerned.

And that’s it. Fairly painless, right? As always, feedback/discussion is welcome, and I’ll see you guys again next week for another dose of cover art celebration.
