Release Date: 11th December 2013

This series has been a surprise hit for me, both in looks and tone. Following the adventures of Abe when he’s away from B.P.R.D., this issue is a flashback of sorts being set in 1983, it follows Abe detailing the exploration of a Mayan ruin. As always with a Mingnola story the slow pacing followed by a page turning ending is welcoming and Oeming’s art seems suited to a younger Abe with an attention to detail with the ruins that is nothing short of beautiful.

Delving slightly into spoiler territory, the scene with Abe and the survivor goes to show just how inquisitive Abe is in finding the source of the attacker, which turns out to be a familiar foe, to an extent, for any readers of recent B.P.R.D. books.

Being a done in one it is the perfect small package, both story and art are good and its all wrapped up in the one issue. While you’re not missing anything in the grand scheme of things, it’s a fantastic single issue for fans of Mingnola’s work and another great jumping on point for newer readers to the series.

Rating: 8/10.
