Sup guys! I realised today that, although I’ve been around behind the scenes for about a month now and you might have seen my name attached to a few things, I haven’t actually introduced myself. So hi, I’m Lauren, and I’m the new BCP overlord admin.
The Guardians of the Galaxy trailer dropped this week, and lets not pretend it wasn’t absolutely awesome. But it did get me thinking that I’ve fallen way behind on the current run of Guardians comics. And then I realised that I’m ridiculously behind on pretty much everything I’m reading, to the point that I can’t even properly remember what I was reading. The only books I’m actually up-to-date with are Young Avengers and Saga – one of which has ended, and the other is on a break. So now that I can no longer blame education for me being behind, I really need to start reading things again.
In the non-comics world, a video game I was really looking forward to has been shelved by the publishers. The game is the currently untitled third in the Zero Escape series, which is a series of visual novel puzzle games in which characters try to “Seek A Way Out” of locked rooms. The game’s creator is currently looking into other funding options, including crowdfunding, which got me thinking about crowdfunding in the comics industry.
Crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter are interesting, because they put the fate of the project directly in the hands of its intended audience, who will voice their support with financial backing – or they won’t. This forces creators to connect with their audiences immediately or risk crashing and burning at the first hurdle. More and more independent creators are turning to crowdfunding to get their project off the ground, and this could be really great for the growth of the comics industry.
I enjoyed interviewing Kickstarter creator Damian Wampler earlier in the month, so if people are interested in more BCP coverage of Kickstarter comics then let me know and I will make it happen.
Well that’s all for now folks, but I shall see you all again next week with more overlord musings thoughts.
Oh also, I am absolutely terrible at titles (as you can see), so if anyone wants to suggest a suitable name for this column thingy then leave it in the comments below!
