First things first: IF YOU ARE A SCIENCE FICTION FAN AND YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY READING THIS, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera have created a Science Fiction thrill ride that any and every sci fi fan can appreciate! This is by far one of the most impressive books on comic shelves right not, at least in this humble reviewer’s opinion. It’s only four issues in, so do yourself a favor spend the fifteen bucks, and go out today and get caught up! Image seems to be on the forefront of non-super powered comics right now and this is most definitely one of the best!
This latest installment in the dimension jumping team picks up right where the last issue left off without missing a step. We find Ward still making his way back to the injured Grant with the Shaman and the Pillar getting ready to fire up and make another jump. The action is there from page one with a couple of nice double-page spread sections that capture the sheer intensity of what is going on in the story. The team makes a jump and we are interjected into another dimension with more new species and more eye-catching landscapes. The issue ends leaving you foaming at the mouth and already desperate for issue 5 to be in your hands.
Rick Remender is doing an absolutely outstanding job with the writing duties on this book. The concept he has created and the characters that go along with it engage the reader like they were watching this story play out on a movie screen. I am personally a fan of all things science fiction so my opinion may be a little biased but as far as that goes this is still one of the better comics you could grab off the shelf of your your local shop. I myself may have to grab some physical copies of this soon instead of just having the digital to review off of so that I can proudly add it to my collection. The character development is very well done, each character showing a little more and more of their true nature in each passing issue and showing how they play a role in this misfit team of ‘explorers’. And the story, while it may bring to mind concepts done in science fiction movies or TV series in the past is still fresh and new in its approach.
Matteo Scalera, what else is there to say, but this artist has talent and a very vivid imagination. To be able to create new creatures and new environments in almost every issue is not an easy feat to accomplish. The pairing of Remender and Scalera was a match made in comic book heaven. Remender’s story telling ability coupled with Scalera’s talent and imagination could make any story come to life. If it weren’t for the writing skills the artistic skills alone would make me keep coming back month after month just to see what new designs Scalera has come up with.
Do yourself a favor and pick this comic up while it’s still early in issues, get caught up and stay along with me for the adventure!
