BCP Expanded Universe presents… Welcome to the Danger Zone!

Okay, so I’ll fully admit that I arrived to the Archer party a little late, being introduced to the show – as I have been with so many things lately – via Netflix. However, after devouring the first three seasons in a couple of days, it’s safe to say that I’ve been pretty much hooked ever since.

A lot of the humour on the show relies on callbacks, in-jokes and (occasionally obscure) pop culture references, so those dropping in midway through may feel more than a little lost. But for those of us who have taken the time to enjoy this series from episode one, the hilarity of such things as Archer’s increasingly elaborate voicemail pranks – or ongoing battle with tinnitus – is difficult to beat.

Also, in a bit of a rarity for these type of shows, pretty much every main character is bloody hilarious, and they are all giventheir own unique moments to shine. The voice cast does some stellar work to help this, with H. John Benjamin’s dry delivery as Archer being the undoubted standout. However, Jessica Walter (Malory Archer), Amber Nash (Pam Poovey) and Lucky Yates (Dr. Krieger) also do a terrific job with their comic timing.

Now admittedly, Season 4 started to show a slight decline in quality, which led the series to jump the shark just a tad by moving the I.S.I.S. crew to Miami for Season 5. However, rather than coming across as a desperate gimmick to keep things fresh, it actually worked rather well and, despite criticism from some longtime fans that it “doesn’t feel like the *real* Archer anymore”, I’m actually rather loving it.

Plus, with the series recently being picked up by FX for two more 13-episode series’, and Netflix carrying at least the first 3 seasons (depending on what region you’re in) there’s never been a better time to start getting into Archer.
