Gate-way reaches the end of its first 4-issue run… but it is very clear there is more to be expected from this dark title.

Issue begins as our protagonist Jake begins to make a name for himself in the murky underworld of the ironically named Freedomtown. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a “the next big villain” type of name, this is a “won’t stop killing bad guys” type of name. At the end of Issue Jake fell victim to an attack from a mysterious assailant – and the first half of this issue is very much dealing with the aftermath of this attack. The second half has on offer some bizarre cults, serious bloodshed and bad language.

The art in Issue remains consistent with the first 3 issues, with bold lines and exaggerated facial expressions giving the issue a cartoon-esque quality while never transcending into childlike territory.

Despite this being (apparently) the last issue in a 4-issue arc, there was plenty of unanswered questions at the end of this final issue. However, there is a significantly important cliffhanger ending, which I assume has set up for another run of this title at a later date. I would advise reading if you have read the rest of this run!

Rating: 3/5.
