Review – Chaos #1 (Of 6) (Dynamite)
Publisher: Dynamite
Writer: Tim Seeley
Artist: Mirka Andolfo
Release Date: 7th May 2014
Brian Pulido’s Chaos! Comics imprint was one of the big indie success stories of the 90s, but it’s one I must admit passed me by. Characters like Lady Death, Purgatori and Chastity were textbook examples of the Bad Girl phase of comics, horror-based hotties with exaggerated figures and demonic powers.
With Pulido no longer involved in the company and tastes in comics having moved on somewhat, Dynamite have taken the bold move of relaunching the line under the umbrella of a single title, Chaos! Smartly, they’ve enlisted Tim Seeley as the mastermind behind it all. As writer of the brilliant Hack/Slash, Seeley proved he knew his horror, as well as how to write an ostensibly “bad girl” character without falling into lame T&A.
Bringing characters like Purgatori, Chastity and Evil Ernie (no Lady Death for some reason) together in the one title works well. There’s an Apocalypse on the horizon, but instead of teaming up to fight it like superheroes would, the Chaos! characters immediately start scheming, betraying and generally behaving abominably. It’s tons of fun and gets the balance of humour and horror just right, as does Mirka Andolfo’s art, which is just the right side of cheesecake.
With a new reboot of all the characters apart from Ernie, now’s the perfect time to jump into the Chaos! universe.
