Solar02-Cov-DoePublisher: Dynamite Comics
Writer: Frank Barbiere
Artist: Joe Bennett
Release Date: 21st May 2014

What can I say about this one, other than the fact that, for me, this felt like a significant upswing from first issue I reviewed. The pieces of the jigsaw were laid out in issue one, but for a debut issue didn’t really pack any wallop.

As you will know by now, Solar went critical in a room with his daughter towards the end of the last issue, and throughout that issue I felt Solar came across rather flat, almost like an Atomic Man archetype. However, this issue expands upon him (or rather expands his family, particularly his daughter) and I now find myself wanting to see where that goes. The irony is that for being the title character Solar has remained largely absent with the exception of a few brief grandiose appearances.

The art, as before, remains fairly nice, if a tad splashy. The action scene featuring an alien robot looks ripped straight from a Kirby book, so clearly Joe Bennett is an artist who wears his influences on his sleeve.  That’s not a slight on him in any way, as I felt it looked great and fitted the action scenes well.

Now that his family and core supporting cast have been interestingly established, Solar has one or two more feathers in his cap. Now I want to see where the story goes with him and how he will interact with his family.

Rating: 4/5.
