BOOM! are quickly becoming one of my favourite publishers, and with more and more high calibre books like The Woods on their list, its easy to see why.

I do, however, have a confession. I had every single issue of the book sitting waiting to be read, but just somehow never got round to it.  However, with the release of the TP it seemed like the perfect chance to jump in and I can happily report I’m a f*cking idiot for not picking up the book before! James Tynion IV has created a story here which follows the students and staff from a school in America who are transported to an alien world and left to fight for themselves. The end result is something straight out of an 80’s sci-fi/horror film or a Stephen King book. Full of good characterisation, suspense and an irritating animal side-character, its a true pleasure to read. My only issue is that it follows the numbers a little too closely, with almost every character being an overused teen trope.

Michael Dialynas smashes it out of the park with the art on the book, with rich alien landscapes and a light, comedic feel to character design that feels familiar enough but stylistically, still fresh and new. Perhaps the design work on the aliens in the book could’ve been a bit more “out there”, with the original analogue being too close to earth creatures – however, that may have been intentional.

With shock value galore (the flies, oh god, the flies!) and a B-movie teen horror feel that should suck everyone in, this book needs to be on your pull list, even just for the Lost-like levels of intrigue that the story poses

Rating: 4/5.
